Trauma Sensitive Yoga
Trauma-informed cueing in yoga is an approach to communication that creates a safe, inclusive environment by being mindful of language and instructions.
Here's how it's typically implemented:
Choice-based language: Instructors offer options rather than commands, empowering students to make decisions about their practice. For example, saying "If you'd like, you can..." instead of "You should..."
Invitational tone: Using phrases like "I invite you to..." or "When you're ready..." allows students to move at their own pace and comfort level.
Avoid physical adjustments: Unless explicitly consented to, hands-on adjustments are minimized to respect personal boundaries.
Clear, descriptive language: Instructions focus on clear, anatomical descriptions rather than vague or potentially triggering terms.
Normalize variations: Regularly mentioning that modifications are welcome helps create an inclusive atmosphere where all bodies and abilities are respected.
Avoid potentially triggering language: Being mindful of words that might have negative associations for some individuals. (ie. anatomical names of sex organs, belly, value-based descriptions)
Emphasize present-moment awareness: Encouraging focus on current sensations rather than pushing for future goals or comparing to past experiences.
Offer grounding techniques: Providing simple methods for students to reconnect with their surroundings if they feel overwhelmed.
Create predictability: Clearly outline the structure of the class at the beginning to reduce anxiety about what's coming next.
Empower personal agency: Regularly remind students that they can rest, modify, or opt out of any pose at any time.
This approach is particularly valuable in creating an environment for my clients, including those who have experienced trauma, feel safe and supported in their practice. It allows for a more inclusive and accessible yoga experience, recognizing that each person's needs and boundaries are unique.
